Using nature-based solutions for improved livelihoods
Towards water and food security in Timor-Leste

Working across six municipalities and three different climate zones, researchers are beginning to better understand how rural communities can sustainably manage available water resources for improved food and water security through social science and hydrological research. This project is funded by ACIAR.

Improving access to clean water in Fijian communities

Together with the Water Authority of Fiji, UNSW is working to improve water quality in Fiji by increasing capabilities of water treatment plants. Experts are working to establish a Hydrologic Information Management System and a forecasting model to predict turbidity levels within the main tributaries to water treatment processing plants.

Greening Spaces
Greening hospital terraces for improved wellbeing

Through research, education, cross-faculty collaboration and partnership with hospital executives and stakeholders, we are supporting the restoration and revitalisation of outdoor spaces within the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick. Using nature-based solutions, the revitalisation will facilitate better connection to nature and to one another.

Climate change impacts on water security in Palau, Tonga and Timor-Leste

In collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), members of the UNSW water community studied linkages between water and climate within three Pacific Small Island Developing States – Palau, Tonga and Timor-Leste. This important work is enabling informed decision-making for investments in climate adaptation.

Sustainable growth of data centres: An interdisciplinary approach

Data centres are significant consumers of energy and water, and are not yet well provided for in hot or highly variable climates. UNSW has transdisciplinary expertise that is assisting with advancing Australia's approach, bringing together key researchers in Artificial Intelligence, energy, city planning, industrial decarbonisation and water.
