The School of Mathematics and Statistics has climbed higher in this year’s QS Subject Rankings - reflecting its growing global reputation and research excellence.
Mathematics is among 20 UNSW Sydney subjects recognised in the Top 50 globally. The School has moved up from 48 in 2025 to 42 this year in Mathematics (2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject). It also ranked equal first nationally and across Oceania for Statistics and Operations Research.
The School has traditionally performed strongly in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, with these fields regularly placing among the top nationally.
This year, UNSW performed well overall, with 39 subjects placed in the global top 100. Rankings indicators are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations.
"A stellar outcome, and an acknowledgment of the excellence in the School as well as the breadth of expertise across so many areas of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics", commented Professor Andrew Francis, Head of the UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics.
"We don't pursue our research for rankings, and we don't teach our amazing students for rankings, but it is gratifying to have this recognition from our peers.

The School's latest result builds on other recent recognition. The Australian’s Research Magazine 2026 named UNSW Sydney as the Leading Research Institution nationally in the Fields of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Analysis, marking the fifth consecutive year it has achieved the top spot for Computational Mathematics.
For six consecutive years, Scimago Institutions Rankings has placed the School #1 in Australia for Mathematics (2021-2026). Their ranking methodology focuses on scientific output, research impact, and innovation.
These recent results underscore the School’s sustained excellence and growing international standing. Congratulations to School members on this latest success.
