In October, Yuwaya Ngarra-li Research Associate Alicia Dunning and Housing Project Manager Samantha Rich visited Walgett. Alicia ran cooking and food safety workshops for the Galuma-li Youth Wellbeing Service. They cooked lemon chicken stir-fry (which is a Meal of the Month recipe) and chocolate rivermint brownies. Sam worked with the DEG on design plans, as well as showing children and young people how to use thermal measuring devices to check building temperatures and assist in choosing the best heat management materials.

Alicia returned to Walgett earlier this month with renowned Bundjalung chef Mark Olive, aka ‘The Black Olive’, to provide a cooking demonstration at Galuma-li. Mark cooked up a lemon myrtle stir-fry and a lemon myrtle chicken salad with a bush lemon vinegarette. The bush lemons were collected by a local community member. Two lucky attendees won some native herbs and a signed copy of Mark’s cookbook Outback Cafe in the lucky door prize. Mark also gifted some native plants, including native thyme, saltbush and fingerlime. Before heading back to Sydney, the Rangers took Mark and Alicia out on Country where they tried some local bush medicine.
