Welcome message from the Chair

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the work of the UNSW Judith Neilson Chair of Contemporary Art (JNCCA). The creation of this unique academic position is the result of a multi-million-dollar endowment gifted to the university by the renowned philanthropist Judith Neilson AM. As such, it represents a significant milestone in UNSW’s continuing development of scholarly research at the highest level. The Chair is aimed at advancing a critical understanding of contemporary art and culture through innovations not only in research but also advocacy and teaching. The endowment supports the appointment of a Chair Professor as well as a Postdoctoral Fellow, visting professors, a dedicated project manager and other professional support staff.

Judith Neilson's transformative act of philanthropy specifically recognises the importance of research related to contemporary art produced by artists from the Sinosphere: mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and related diasporas. Over the last four decades, Sinospheric contemporary art has impacted significantly on culture across the globe. That impact accompanies the increasing cultural, social and economic presence of the People's Republic China on the world stage since the ending of the Cold War. The establishment of the JNCCA strongly enriches UNSW’s already active engagement in leading-edge research related to art and culture.

The establishment of the Chair not only strengthens cultural and scholarly bonds between the Chinese speaking world and Australia it also aligns with UNSW's wider dedication to the building of enduring partnerships in research, culture, education, and innovation worldwide.

In the media

In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Prof. Gladston explained: “All art lives under localised restrictions which ultimately require indirectness and ambiguity.”
